You’ve bought their school supplies. You’ve organized their books. You’ve helped them put together their backpack. You’ve planned their lunches. You seem to have everything ready for back-to-school time. But there’s still that undercurrent of chaos. There’s still a worry in the back of your mind about your children’s well-being. So what is missing?
Enter Essential Oils!
Essential oils! These precious, delicious-smelling compounds can work wonders in the life of a school kid. There is even the science to prove it! Rosemary has been shown to boost memory. Frankincense may be a neuroprotective agent and also a boost to the immune system. And anyone who has used peppermint can tell you that it helps energize the mind and body. So how can your children reap these benefits so they excel in school?
Peppermint and Wild Orange
Peppermint essential oil is like natural energy in a bottle. Skip the sugary drinks and run right to peppermint! It pairs well with wild orange essential oil. Orange is sweet-smelling and like happiness in a bottle. Before your kids catch the bus or they hop in the car, give them a dose of happy, focused energy. Put one drop of each oil on their hands, have them rub their hands together and then breathe deeply. (Make sure they don’t get their hands too close to their eyes!) They could even run their hands through their hair to get every last molecule.
You might only think of rosemary as being a cooking herb, but it is a powerhouse for the brain. It can help your children retain more information and focus better while they study. They could even take a bottle of rosemary to school with them! Whenever they are learning a new subject, encourage your child to take a sniff of rosemary as they begin. Then do the same at home when studying the topic. If the scent is too strong for them, mix with peppermint.
Lemon or Lime
Remember what I said about skipping the sugary drinks? Your children will most likely want something yummy to drink at school, not just plain water – especially if you are transitioning from a standard American diet! Citrus essential oils taste really good in water. Two popular choices with kids are lemon or lime. (I’m 100% serious: I’ve seen kids try my lemon essential oil water and say “I want more of that water!”) Make sure they are using a glass or stainless steel bottle, NOT a plastic bottle! Just put one drop of lemon or lime essential oil into their bottle after filling it. Your kids will love the taste and they will be getting a natural, gentle detox every day!
Keeping children’s immune systems strong during school can be a challenge. Give them an extra boost and protection with frankincense! Every morning and night, rub the bottoms of their feet with a couple drops of frankincense essential oil. Remember that frankincense can also give their brain a boost by promoting a healthy inflammatory response. You could also rub frankincense on their entire spine and on their neck. Just a little bit goes a long way!
Sometimes kids have way too much energy! Especially at night when they should be sleeping, right? Help your children calm down in the evening with lavender essential oil. It can be used in a myriad of ways: in the bathtub, in lotion, in a diffuser in their bedroom, and on the bottoms of their feet.
Empower Your Children
One great thing about essential oils is that you can empower your children to take charge of their own health! Essential oils are safe when used correctly, so just teach your children about proper usage. For smaller kids and babies, diluting essential oils with fractionated coconut oil (FCO) will protect their tender skin against possible sensitization. You can fill rollerball bottles with essential oil and FCO so that they can apply “my oils” themselves! Older children are responsible enough to even carry essential oils with them to school.
