Essential Oils Debunked: Part I
I have been a wholesale member and Wellness Advocate of doTERRA International for over three years, and I’ve enjoyed every moment of it. I have always been a fan of “alternative” medicine, and trying essential oils came very naturally to me. However, I’ve also run into some very common misconceptions, concerns, and flat-out myths that people have or believe about essential oils and the network marketing business. I have even wondered some of these things myself. I wanted to address them, but since one blog post would be quite long, I’m breaking it up into parts. Each part will address one specific topic, so remember to return for more!
Today’s topic: “It’s too expensive.”
This is a topic that I completely understand. I am a self-proclaimed tightwad. Spending money can be difficult for me. I am not ashamed to shop at Goodwill or from the must-go rack at Target. If there’s a deal to be had, I will find it!
So one might ask, “How are you okay with buying these expensive essential oils?” I am okay – TOTALLY okay – with spending money on high-quality, therapeutic-grade essential oils because they are worth every penny, AND they are actually not expensive when you break it down.
What does “expensive” really mean?
“Expensive” hinges on the price, of course, but it also hinges on how much value we place on the item. Would buying $100 of clothes every month be expensive to me? You bet. I don’t need that much new clothing every month. It’s not necessary to my survival, and it doesn’t contribute to my well-being. But buying $100 worth of oils and supplements every month? Totally fine with that. It’s categorically different than buying clothes.
Even though it’s the same dollar amount, the difference with essential oils is that it’s an investment in my health and my future….and also the future of my future children. If I take care of myself now, over the long run I will actually be saving money – as well as time and lower stress.
You know what’s expensive? Being sick. Going to the hospital. Medications. Missing work due to illness.
doTERRA is affordable
So that’s the philosophical side of debunking the “expensive” myth of essential oils. What about the practical dollar amount? If you compare bottle for bottle of doTERRA’s oils with another brand of essential oil (for instance, one you might find at the grocery store), my company WILL be more expensive. But what is the quality of that cheaper oil? I guarantee that the quality is cheaper, and with cheap essential oil comes less effectiveness and the risk of toxicity. Essential oils aren’t regulated by any governmental entity, so each company is left to set their own standards. Most companies want to get the best bang for their buck, so they extract using chemicals, they use artificial fillers, and they don’t source from the best farmers or areas.
Therapeutic quality is important
doTERRA, like every other essential oil company, has set their own standards….but they are much higher than others in the industry. Each liter of oil goes through up to 12 tests three times, one of which is at an independent 3rd party laboratory. They also source from indigenous sources around the world, working with farmers who use no pesticides or chemicals. They extract the oils using steam distillation or, in the case of citrus, cold pressing – NO chemicals! These factors contribute to the higher price per bottle compared to grocery store brands. But unlike the latter, doTERRA’s oils are meant to be used therapeutically. If we want essential oils to be highly effective and safe, they MUST be of high quality.
Essential oils: price per dose
Let’s now talk about the price per dose of essential oils. A 15ml bottle of DigestZen (“digestive blend”) is $31 wholesale. There are 250 drops in a 15ml bottle, and one dose is generally 2 drops. This means that one dose of DigestZen is only 25 cents! Wouldn’t you agree that doTERRA essential oils are less expensive than other solutions you might have on hand? Not to mention more effective and contain no artificial, dangerous ingredients?
How to get the lowest price with doTERRA
Finally, let’s talk about how to get bargains with doTERRA. The most expensive way to buy essential oils is retail. Using our DigestZen example, a 15ml bottle would cost $41.33 retail. How can you get it for only $31? By becoming a wholesale member. It works similarly to Costco: for a $35 fee the first year (and $25 each year after) you get 25% off retail price – a significant savings! (If you buy a kit, you save even more and basically get your first year’s membership for free.) In addition, you have the opportunity to become a Loyalty member, where with each monthly order you earn points that can be redeemed for free products. Right now I have 71 points sitting in my account and I’m so excited to get some free oils my next order! Also, doTERRA always offers a free product of the month, a 10% off item, and often has a special promotion for another free product. Loyalty IS rewarded! Therefore, I only recommend the wholesale option. (Friends don’t let friends buy retail!)
Is your health worth it?
I could go on and on about how essential oils are worth every penny, but these points cover the main concerns. Is your health a high priority for you? Is having longevity and a good quality life important? Do you want to try avoiding those things you see the average American dealing with? Are you just sick and tired of being sick and tired? When I found doTERRA three years ago, I was there. I wanted a natural solution to staying healthy. If you have ANY of these desires, enter your email below to get started.
